Last night, the much talked about Once Upon a Time season 3 death occurred. Many of us saw this Once Upon a Time season 3 death coming from the moment it was hinted. Some of us (me) wanted to hope our fears would not come true. And even more of us (me, again) just wanted the death to actually be “someone we didn’t expect.” In the end, our character died a hero, but will his death change things?

MICHAEL RAYMOND-JAMES

Neal Cassidy, aka Baelfire, died on last night’s episode of Once Upon a Time season 3. Some of us may still be recovering from the rushed departure of Neal. Additionally, because no one from the show has commented about it, more Baelfire fans may be hoping his death won’t stick. But if you believe TVLine, which you should, this death is final. Michael Raymond James has left the building. As we process and accept this, we have to explore how, if at all, this death might change the course of the series.

Here are the major ways we think Neal’s death will change Once Upon a Time season 3.

The Ratings Game

One way or another, we believe, the ratings will shift on Once Upon a Time. They may go up because people are happy this love triangle is finally over. Therefore, the show might get back to its roots. It might also go up from people who genuinely hated Neal, or loved the CaptainSwan ship, so they feel compelled to make sure the ratings get better and stay good.

The other side of this coin is those who didn’t like how the death was handled or it at all. Therefore, out of protest, or genuinely having no more interest in the series, turns away from it, and stays away. Maybe some might have just see this as even more proof the show isn’t the one they loved in the past.

Captain Swan Becomes Endgame

No one knows the writers’ initial plans, but them, the producers, and maybe the network, but what we do know now is Hook wins by default, which feels like a hollow victory for Hook, but it’s still a victory. The series has too many characters, so no need to add another on Once Upon a Time. It now needs to work on convincing us (those who don’t want nor like this pairing) that it’s a good idea. Good writing can make even the biggest non-believers into ones. This will be the biggest testament to Once Upon a Time’s writers’ abilities.

Gives the Characters a Uniting Mission

Neal at his core is linked to all the major Once Upon a Time characters. He’s also the reason Storybrooke exists. Now, everyone has a common driving force: avenge Neal’s death. Plot wise, it does work very well.

Because I constantly said how much I liked the character of Neal, and rolled my eyes at the endless pimping of Hook from Once’s writers, I am very sad to see that this death happened. However, what’s done is done, so all I, and other Neal fans, can do is wish Michael Raymond James the best on his future endeavors. He’ll always be ‘Renee’ in my TV writing eyes. We’re looking forward to his next TV project.

How are you taking Neal’s death on Once Upon a Time the day after? What ways do you think Neal’s death changes things?
